There’s A Place in the Sun

My mother was a big Stevie Wonder fan back in the day. She’d work in the bakery of Rich’s Department store in Atlanta all week long to buy us children shoes and to buy herself a new 45rpm record. Whatever records were stacked on the record player waiting to be played when she got home from baking and decorating cakes all day long had to be rearranged to accommodate whatever Stevie Wonder hit she held in her purse.  Wonder’s ‘66 hits “A Place in the Sun” and “Blowing in the Wind” ( both composed by Bob Dylan) were my mother’s favorites. (Stevie himself was only 16 years old when he recorded the two songs.) Waking to the sound of these Wonders’ hits blasting from the record player was a sure sign to us children that we’d be spending that Saturday cleaning the house at Mama’s orders from top to bottom.

Here’s to you Mama here on Throwback Friday. Sorry it’s taken me so long to get it.

Like a long lonely stream
I keep runnin’ towards a dream
Movin’ on, movin’ on
Like a branch on a tree
I keep reachin’ to be free
Movin’ on, movin’ on.

‘Cause there’s a place in the sun
Where there’s hope for ev’ryone
Where my poor restless heart’s gotta run.
There’s a place in the sun
And before my life is done
Got to find me a place in the sun.

Like an old dusty road
I get weary from the load.
Movin’ on, movin’ on
Like this tired troubled earth
I’ve been rollin’ since my birth
Movin’ on, movin’ on

‘Cause there’s a place in the sun
Where there’s hope for ev’ryone
Where my poor restless heart’s gotta run.
There’s a place in the sun
And before my life is done
Got to find me a place in the sun.

you make my heart glad! I guess we all had those Saturday’s when we learned our housekeeping skills, another lost art. I would play the record player while i complete my chores with the hope of going to a party or canteen later that evening. Purple rain drops the flip side of Uptight was my favorite Stevie Wonder song. I would move from that to I had a talk with my man by Mitty Collier. Maybe after about five times my mother would shout”play that song again and you and that record player are going out the window”. I would put on Meet me at Mary’s place by Sam Cook and that would get her singing and later i would go back to Mitty with no faith no love. WOW! At this momet i’m fifteen again and remembering with much love and appreciation my mother and learning good house keeping skills lol.
Thanks for the memories.

Reading your post was really refreshing today. While you kicked a shout out to your mom, I’d like to leave one for Daddy. His song of choice when I was a little girl was “Do I Do” by Mr. Wonder. I didn’t understand any of the lyrics except, “yes I got some honey kisses for your lips.” The rest was just mumbling jibberish as I giggled and listened to my Daddy sing. Wow, I really miss those days. I thought he was Superman then. In his hatchback Toyota with the sunroof open, I remember his infectious smile and the way he drummed the beat on his steering wheel.

Although my Daddy has been battling cancer, I can still see glimmers of those days when living was easy. Thanks for the throwback and for giving me another reason to call Daddy and tell him how much I love him.

Thanks for the hope ….This website has and always been a place in the sun for me. It is where I tune itno when my poor restless heart has to run and cant leave the office without drama. Something within 2.1 is a watering hole for my spirit and throwback Fridays….let me call it another life preserver. Stevie still lives and sings and my favorite of his was “with a childs heart”, maybe it resonated because I was a child when he sang it. Thanks Renita for creating a place in the sun in cyberspace… our little corner outdoors and safe… in a bad neighborhood, where theres hope for everyone. Thanks for keep “something within” and “us’ real as only a loving mother can .
